How does one even build a rack? (Devember day 4)
Gotta get my expectations back down to earth so today does not have as much insane progress but there are still things. Todays main focus was to try to figure out how I can actually realize the ideas in my head for the box of compute im doing.
Actually before that I did do abit of 3d modeling, trying to get exact screw hole specifications for ATX and E-ATX (as it turns out E-ATX is a mess, so thats going to be fun) Which was suprisingly hard and Im still not sure if I got it right or not.
Box o wonders
Long story short, bigger section will have 2 servers on it, so a general compute server and an LLM server which will need to have PCI-E risers and places to put those GPUs just to make using the slots a hell of alot easier.
Currently I have couple of ideas on how to create this tray for the servers.
The cheapo idea
Basicly just have a tray that rests ontop of a stop that holds up the entire in place. Defenetly the simplest mechanically + easiest on the wallet.
But it am afraid that expanding out the tray will lead to some unintended mechanical stress testing. That could potentially get fixed with a stick.
One looooooooong rail
There are 800+mm rails which potentially could work with our situation. But those are like 40 euros + have the same problem as the cheapo idea where the weight will be pulled out really far.
Two short ones?
Basicly create a rack where systems are back to back and turn out opposite sides of eachother. This is unlikely to be something I go for due to the space requirements of that kind of a setup is too damn high!
What next?
I should probably focus on the actual tray not the mechanism that moves the tray. Atleast now I have some idea what to expect with whatever I go with.
